India-China Border Tunnels: Exploring the Connectivity Boost
The India-China border has long been a focal point of national security and infrastructure development. In an effort to enhance connectivity and bolster defense capabilities, the central government has unveiled plans to construct seven new tunnels along the border.
Combining these tunnels with the already completed and ongoing projects,
the region’s road connectivity is set to undergo a transformation, enabling swift and efficient movement between key areas.

Under the leadership of the Modi Government, there has been a significant focus on developing border infrastructure to safeguard the country’s frontiers.
Over the past three years, five tunnels have been successfully completed, and another ten are currently under construction. With seven more in the planning phase, the government is actively pursuing initiatives that will enhance connectivity along the India-China border.
The Impact of Completed Tunnels
The Atal Tunnel stands out as a notable success, spanning an impressive 9.02 km and completing in 2020. The Atal Tunnel provides year-round access to the Lahaul-Spiti valley, unlocking opportunities for trade, tourism, and military operations.
Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt announced that they expect the Sela Tunnel, which aims to connect Guwahati in Assam with Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, to become fully operational by the end of August.
India-China Border Tunnels: Budget Allocation
The commitment to bolstering border infrastructure is evident from the significant increase in the Border Road Organisation (BRO) budget. Between 2013-14 and 2023-24, the budget has seen a fourfold rise, from Rs 3,782 crore to Rs 14,387 crore. This substantial surge in funding demonstrates the government’s determination to strengthen the region’s road network and improve connectivity.
Length of Constructed Bridges
The construction of bridges plays a pivotal role in the connectivity drive. Between 2014 and 2022, the length of constructed bridges reached an impressive 22,439 meters. In comparison, from 2008 to 2014, only 7,270 meters of bridges were built. This sharp increase in bridge construction showcases the government’s commitment to creating robust infrastructure along the border.
In addition to the tunnel projects, the central government is actively developing a Frontier Highway project that will span approximately 1,800 km in Arunachal Pradesh. This ambitious initiative aims to bolster inter-valley connectivity and improve accessibility to remote areas near the border. The development of this highway is expected to significantly transform both internal and border connectivity.
Minister Ajay Bhatt stressed that the surge in budget allocation, expedited construction, adoption of innovative technologies, and swifter administrative clearances exemplify the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s borders.
These infrastructural developments are not only crucial for connectivity but also play a vital role in strengthening India’s security posture along the border.
The construction of new tunnels along the India-China border, combined with the completed and ongoing projects, heralds a new era of connectivity and accessibility.
